Mercedes Silences Vlogger to Cover Up E20 Mileage Crisis

Indian motorists face collapsing fuel efficiency and corporate deflections as the central government’s aggressive E20 ethanol mandate exposes deep automotive engineering vulnerabilities.

NEW DELHI, July 13 — The Indian government’s heavy-handed rush to mandate E20 ethanol-blended petrol has officially backfired into a public relations nightmare, leaving both state bureaucrats and luxury automakers scrambling to contain consumer fury. What began as an aggressive legislative push to curb oil import bills has rapidly descended into a mechanical crisis for everyday drivers. High-profile motorists are now documenting catastrophic drops in fuel efficiency. The official corporate response from Mercedes-Benz India has only fueled the anger. They chose to issue blanket denials rather than addressing the systemic flaws of forcing high-strung European engines to run on cheap, plant-based alcohol blends.

The state-mandated transition is costing drivers a fortune at the pump.

When prominent vlogger Sourav Joshi exposed a horrific mileage drop on his Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC — claiming his dashboard efficiency plummeted from 17 kilometres per litre down to just 5 kmpl after pumping E20 fuel — it highlighted a painful reality that authorities have desperately tried to suppress. Bureaucrats at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas have repeatedly assured the public that the 20 percent ethanol blend is completely harmless. Yet basic thermodynamics cannot be rewritten by government decree. Ethanol possesses a significantly lower energy density than pure gasoline. This guarantees that every single motorist trapped in India’s grueling urban gridlocks is paying full price for a fuel that delivers fundamentally less power and forces engines to burn through liquid at a punishing rate.

But instead of standing by their customers, corporate giants have predictably aligned with the state narrative.

Mercedes-Benz India rushed out a protective public advisory designed to shield its brand image and maintain compliance with aggressive national BS VI emission mandates. The luxury manufacturer confidently declared that its vehicles are fully certified and completely compatible with E20 blends, effectively gaslighting its own consumer base by implying that severe mileage drops are simply an illusion or the result of bad driving habits. They didn’t offer a real mechanical solution. They offered a corporate press release. For an owner who invested millions of rupees into a precision-engineered German machine, being told by a corporate board that their shrinking tank range is perfectly normal feels like a massive betrayal of trust.

So why are everyday consumers being forced to act as uncompensated crash-test dummies for this national energy experiment?

The answer lies in the government’s desperate bid to hit arbitrary environmental deadlines without building the necessary infrastructure or protecting existing vehicle owners. Millions of older, non-BS VI cars currently on Indian roads are facing accelerated engine degradation, corroded fuel lines, and failing injectors due to the highly hygroscopic nature of ethanol, which actively attracts moisture inside the fuel tank. Even owners of modern luxury vehicles are discovering that the electronic control units must constantly overcompensate for the poor fuel quality. This completely obliterates the advertised fuel economy figures that manufacturers used to sell these premium SUVs in the first place.

Joshi eventually deleted his video after facing an immense, coordinated wave of corporate and systemic pushback. That is the standard playbook when an individual’s real-world data threatens a multi-billion-rupee state programme. The message from the top is incredibly clear. If your vehicle functions poorly under the government’s new fuel regime, you are expected to suffer the financial losses in absolute silence. Independent automotive technicians have quietly warned that prolonged exposure to high-ethanol blends under extreme Indian weather conditions could lead to premature component wear. This leaves luxury car owners holding the bag for astronomical out-of-warranty repair costs once these sensitive systems inevitably degrade.

This entire controversy exposes the deep hypocrisy of a top-down mandate that prioritises trade balance sheets over actual consumer welfare. The central government saves face on the international stage by claiming a massive reduction in fossil fuel reliance, while Mercedes-Benz protects its manufacturing licenses by rubber-stamping state compliance metrics. Neither entity is willing to admit that the Indian motorist is trapped in the middle, paying premium prices for a diluted product that actively harms vehicle performance. It is a grim reality that no amount of corporate public relations or deleted videos can truly erase.

The state got its metrics, the corporation protected its margins, and the driver got the bill.
