A magistrate court in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, has convicted journalist Ravi Nair in a criminal defamation case filed by Adani Enterprises. Nair has been sentenced to one year of simple imprisonment and fined ₹5,000.

The Case:

The conviction stems from a series of posts Nair made on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) between October 2020 and July 2021. Adani Enterprises alleged that these posts—which touched on topics including the Adani Group’s operations, allegations by Hindenburg Research, and the privatization of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust—contained false statements intended to damage the company’s reputation.

The Court’s View:

The court ruled that the offence of defamation was proven, stating that Nair’s posts went beyond “fair comment” or legitimate criticism. The magistrate emphasized that as a journalist and public commentator, Nair is expected to be aware of the impact his words carry on digital platforms.

The judge denied a request for probation, noting that doing so would dilute the law’s deterrent effect, especially in cases involving reputational harm.
