MILAN — The 2026 Winter Olympics, meant to be a showcase of international unity, have instead become a flashpoint for intense geopolitical unrest. For the third consecutive day, the streets of Milan have been transformed into a theater of conflict as thousands of demonstrators gathered to protest the inclusion of the Israeli delegation in the Games.

What began as a series of peaceful marches has rapidly devolved into violent clashes between activists and Italian security forces, leaving parts of the city’s southern districts under a cloud of tear gas and smoke.
The most significant escalation occurred late Saturday and continued into the early hours of Wednesday, as a splinter group of roughly 100 hooded protesters broke away from a larger march of 10,000 people.
Authorities reported that demonstrators targeted the Olympic Village and the Santagiulia Arena, launching firecrackers, flares, and smoke bombs at police cordons. In response, Italian riot police deployed:
- High-pressure water cannons to disperse crowds.
- Volleys of tear gas that sent residents and tourists fleeing from central piazzas.
- Strategic blockades to prevent protesters from reaching the main highway leading to Olympic venues.
The Core of the Dissent: “Double Standards”
The “Unsustainable Olympics Committee” (CIO), alongside various pro-Palestinian student groups, has spearheaded the movement. Their primary demand is the immediate exclusion of Israel from the 2026 Games, citing the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
“If Russian athletes are barred from marching under their flag because of war crimes, then Israel should not be allowed to parade its flag while committing what we see as genocide,” one student organizer told local media. “The International Olympic Committee cannot claim to be ‘neutral’ while applying such glaring double standards.”
The Israeli delegation, comprised of nine athletes, was met with a visible “smattering of boos” during the opening ceremony at San Siro stadium, though organizers attempted to drown out the noise with high-volume music.
A Multi-Front Protest
While the focus on Israel has dominated the headlines, the unrest is fueled by a “perfect storm” of local and international grievances:
- The “Anti-ICE” Movement: Protesters are also targeting the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, who are in Milan as part of the security detail for U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
- Environmental Concerns: Activists are mourning the loss of thousands of trees felled for the new bobsled run in Cortina.
- Cost of Living: Many locals are furious over “gentrification and speculation” that they claim has made Milan’s housing market unaffordable for the working class.
Government Response
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has taken a hardline stance against the unrest, labeling the more violent demonstrators as “enemies of Italy” and accusing them of trying to sabotage a moment of national pride. Police have confirmed at least seven arrests so far, with more expected as they review surveillance footage of the clashes.
As the Games continue, the security perimeter around the Olympic Village remains at its highest alert level, with “red zones” established across the city to prevent further disruption to the sporting events.
