The Middle East is plunged into a full-scale regional conflict after a joint US-Israeli “preemptive” assault targets the heart of Tehran, prompting sweeping Iranian strikes on Israel and American Gulf bases.

In an unprecedented escalation that has plunged the Middle East into a full-blown regional war, the United States and Israel launched massive, coordinated military strikes across Iran early Saturday morning. The sweeping assault, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury” by the US and “Operation Roaring Lion” by Israel, targeted over 30 critical sites, including the very heart of the Iranian regime in Tehran.

Within hours, the Islamic Republic answered back. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) unleashed a fierce retaliatory wave of ballistic missiles and explosive drones aimed at northern and central Israel, as well as multiple US military installations scattered across the Persian Gulf.

Striking the Heart of the Regime

The joint US-Israeli bombardment marks a staggering escalation following the collapse of high-stakes nuclear negotiations in Geneva just days prior. The dawn strikes targeted highly sensitive military, intelligence, and government infrastructure deep within Iranian territory.

Most notably, explosions rocked downtown Tehran, with columns of thick black smoke billowing near the residential and office compound of Iran’s 86-year-old Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to regional intelligence sources, Khamenei had been moved to a secure, undisclosed location prior to the bombardment. Other confirmed targets included the Ministry of Intelligence, the Atomic Energy Agency of Iran, and the highly sensitive Parchin military complex. Heavy blasts were also reported in the cities of Isfahan, Qom, Karaj, and Kermanshah.

US President Donald Trump, who had been heavily telegraphing military action following the expiration of his negotiating deadline, confirmed the assault in a social media video address. Declaring the commencement of “major combat operations,” Trump explicitly called for regime change.

“We are undertaking a massive and ongoing operation to prevent this very wicked, radical dictatorship from threatening America,” Trump stated, urging the Iranian people to rise up and “take over your government.” US officials confirmed that American strikes are being executed via both air and naval assets, heavily utilizing the vast fleet of warships and aircraft carriers recently repositioned to the region.

Tehran’s “Crushing” Retaliation

Iran’s response was swift and sweeping. Vowing a “crushing” retaliation to what the Iranian Foreign Ministry called a “gross violation of territorial integrity,” the IRGC launched what it described as a “first wave” of widespread drone and missile attacks.

Air raid sirens wailed across Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and northern Israel throughout Saturday afternoon. The Israeli government immediately declared a nationwide state of emergency. Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the closure of all schools, banned public gatherings, and instructed millions of citizens to remain close to reinforced bomb shelters as the Iron Dome and Arrow defense systems worked frantically to intercept incoming projectiles.

However, the retaliatory fire was not limited to Israel. In a move that dramatically widens the conflict’s geographic scope, Iran aggressively targeted US military interests across the Arabian Peninsula. Ballistic missiles and drones were launched at the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar (the largest US military facility in the region), the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait, the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, and the US Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain.

While Qatari defense officials reported successfully intercepting all incoming missiles using US-made Patriot batteries, explosions and intercepts were visibly witnessed in the skies over Doha, Abu Dhabi, and Kuwait. Further complicating the battlefield, separate airstrikes in Baghdad targeted the headquarters of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), an Iran-backed paramilitary group, resulting in early reports of casualties.

A Region on Lockdown

The outbreak of direct, state-on-state warfare has effectively paralyzed the Middle East. Civil aviation has ground to a complete halt. Israel, Iran, Iraq, and Kuwait have abruptly shut down their respective airspaces, stranding tens of thousands of passengers globally. Major international carriers, including Air India and IndiGo, immediately canceled all flights to the region, citing severe and unpredictable security risks.

The immediate fallout of these strikes represents the realization of the international community’s worst fears. For decades, the US, Israel, and Iran have engaged in a shadowy proxy war, fighting through allied militias in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. Today, the shadow war is over. The direct confrontation that global diplomats have desperately tried to avert has finally arrived.

As the sun sets on a fractured Middle East, the world braces for what comes next. With Washington promising “ongoing” operations to raze Iran’s missile industry to the ground, and Tehran promising to mobilize “all their might and resources” in self-defense, diplomatic off-ramps appear entirely closed. The region is now strapped into a high-stakes, highly destructive trajectory, and the coming days will likely reshape the geopolitical map of the Middle East for generations to come
