The Narendra Modi Stadium turned into a cauldron of pure madness tonight. What started as a high-stakes Group D clash in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 ended up as the first-ever double Super Over decider in tournament history. South Africa somehow, someway, scraped through by four runs after two nerve-shredding Super Overs, leaving Afghanistan staring at heartbreak yet again.

South Africa 187/6 (20 overs) = Afghanistan 187 (19.4 overs)

1st Super Over: 17/1 each

2nd Super Over: SA 23/0 beat AFG 19/2

Lungi Ngidi was the hero with 3/26 and later the Player of the Match, but this one belonged to the drama gods.

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan put South Africa in, hoping the spin-heavy attack would exploit any grip on the pitch. Early on it looked smart Aiden Markram fell cheaply. But Quinton de Kock (59 off 41) and Ryan Rickelton (61 off 28) said “not today.” Their 114-run stand turned the game around after a sluggish powerplay. Rashid struck twice in the 13th over to remove both set batters, and Azmatullah Omarzai (3/41) picked up two more in the 18th, but Marco Jansen’s late cameo (16 off 7) pushed SA to a fighting 187/6.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz walked out like a man on a mission. 84 off just 42 balls, three sixes in the Super Over later – the guy was an absolute rockstar. He took Afghanistan from 56/3 to within touching distance. But the death overs went haywire.

Needing 13 off the final over with one wicket left, Kagiso Rabada bowled two no-balls. Noor Ahmad smashed one for six. Then came the free-hit chaos – a running mix-up, Fazalhaq Farooqi run out going for the second run. Scores level. Super Over time.

Afghanistan batted first – Azmatullah Omarzai smashed two fours and a six. SA needed 18 off 6. Dewald Brevis fell early, but Tristan Stubbs smashed the last ball for six to tie it again. History made.

David Miller walked out with Stubbs and just smoked it – 16 off four balls. SA posted 23/0.

Afghanistan needed 24. Gurbaz opened with Mohammad Nabi… Keshav Maharaj took Nabi off ball two. But Gurbaz went berserk – three sixes in a row. Five needed off the last ball. He went for the fourth six… straight to point. Caught. Game over. Afghanistan 19/2.

Gurbaz walked off devastated. The entire stadium was stunned. SA players hugged like they’d just won the trophy.

South Africa stay unbeaten against Afghanistan in T20Is and now have two wins in Group D. Afghanistan, after losses to New Zealand and now this, are almost out unless miracles happen against UAE and Canada.

This was cricket at its absolute craziest. No-balls, run-outs, last-ball sixes, three sixes in a Super Over… and still, a four-run defeat.

One for the ages. If you missed it, go watch the highlights right now. Your heart will thank you… or hate you. Either way, you’ll never forget it.

South Africa win by 4 runs (2nd Super Over)

Player of the Match: Lungi Ngidi
