A Scary Sunday in Gariaband: What Really Happened in Dutkaiya?

Imagine a quiet Sunday in your village turning into a scene from a movie and not the good kind. That’s exactly what happened in Dutkaiya, Gariaband, this past weekend. By the time the sun went down, homes were on fire, children were trapped, and several police officers were headed to the hospital.

Here’s the story of how a local dispute spiraled out of control.

The Spark

It all started early Sunday morning with a robbery. Three men allegedly jumped four villagers and made off with their phones. Ordinarily, the police would just step in, and that would be that. But there was a catch: one of the suspects was out on bail for a temple desecration case from last year.

Word traveled fast. Even though the police caught the suspects by 6:00 PM, the mood in the village had already soured. People weren’t just angry about the phones; they were reached a breaking point.

Things Turn Ugly

As evening fell, a mob of hundreds gathered. They weren’t there to talk. Armed with sticks and stones, the crowd targeted a small neighborhood where about ten Muslim families live.

It got chaotic, fast:

• The Arson: At least six houses and a few vehicles were set on fire.

• The Siege: Families were forced to lock themselves inside their own homes while the mob tried to get in.

• The Madrasa: Most heartbreakingly, about half a dozen children were stuck inside a local madrasa while the violence raged right outside the doors.

Why Weren’t the Police Ready?

You might wonder why the police couldn’t stop it sooner. Well, bad timing played a huge role. Most of the local force was away on duty at the Rajim Kumbh festival, leaving the remaining officers completely outnumbered.

These officers stood their ground, but they paid for it. They were pelted with bricks and stones—one officer took a serious hit to the head, and six others were injured before backup finally arrived at 9:00 PM to clear the streets.

Where Things Stand Now

The good news? The police eventually used a tactical vehicle to rescue the kids from the madrasa and got 20 other residents out safely by bus.

As of today, the village is under heavy guard. Two FIRs have been filed, and the authorities are keeping a very close eye on things. Their message to everyone is simple: Stay calm, and please, don’t share those “forwarded” messages on WhatsApp. Rumors only make these fires burn hotter.
