Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai concluded the Ramgarh Mahotsav with a Rs 1 crore development grant and a push to elevate the region’s ancient archaeological profile.
SURGUJA, June 30, 2026 — Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced a Rs 1 crore development fund for Ramgarh’s archaeological sites and the creation of a new Nagar Panchayat during the closing ceremony of the Ramgarh Mahotsav. The move signals a renewed state push to secure global recognition for the region’s ancient caves and cultural heritage, tying historical preservation to broader district infrastructure upgrades.
The funding targets a cluster of sites central to both regional mythology and early Indian history. The state government intends to elevate the profile of the Sita Bengra and Jogimara caves. Sita Bengra is widely regarded as one of India’s oldest surviving performance spaces, while Jogimara is noted for its ancient murals. Historical references also link the Ramgarh area to the composition of Mahakavi Kalidasa’s epic Meghadutam, alongside local beliefs that the region hosted figures from the Ramayana during their exile.
“Ramgarh is not merely a centre for cultural celebrations, but a living symbol of Chhattisgarh’s glorious traditions,” Sai told the gathering. Expanding tourist infrastructure is an immediate priority for the state government as it attempts to draw international visitors to the Surguja district.
The chief minister paired the cultural investments with a localized administrative shift, announcing that Udaipur and Dumardih will be merged to form a unified Nagar Panchayat. He framed these local decisions within a wider state spending pattern, stating his administration has approved development projects worth over Rs 2,387 crore in Surguja over the past two and a half years.
The state’s development narrative remains tightly linked to its security operations. Sai pointed to recent tactical successes against Naxalite factions in the Bastar region, crediting coordinated efforts with federal security forces and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Housing programs, the chief minister noted, are now targeting rehabilitated Naxalites alongside Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) families.
On stage, that focus on PVTGs translated into a public enrollment ceremony. Sai facilitated the ‘Shala Pravesh’—school entry—for six children from the Pahadi Korwa community, distributing study materials and bags to the students.
State ministers present at the event echoed the push to commercialise and preserve Surguja’s history. Tourism and Culture Minister Rajesh Agrawal positioned the annual festival as a vital tool for youth engagement, while Agriculture Minister Ramvichar Netam highlighted the half-century legacy of the Ramgarh Mahotsav itself.
The government closed the two-day event by issuing certificates to social media tourism influencers enlisted to document the district’s sites. The mandate from Raipur is clear: turn regional history into a visible economic engine.
