Four Indian medical students are among several people injured after a gruesome knife attack at a university hostel in Ufa, Russia. The incident, which occurred late Saturday (February 7), was allegedly carried out by a local teenager with suspected links to a neo-Nazi extremist group.

The attack has sent shockwaves through the Indian student community in Russia, prompting an immediate diplomatic intervention by New Delhi.

The Incident: Chaos in Ufa

The violence unfolded at a dormitory of the Bashkir State Medical University in Ufa, the capital of the Bashkortostan Republic, located approximately 1,200 km east of Moscow.

According to local reports and eyewitness accounts, a 15-year-old local boy armed with a knife entered the hostel premises and launched an indiscriminate attack. Panic ensued as students attempted to flee. Russian media outlet Ren TV broadcast footage of ambulances outside the hostel, quoting witnesses who described a chaotic scene with “blood all around.”

The attacker reportedly resisted police intervention, stabbing two officers before being subdued. Russia’s Interior Ministry spokesperson, Maj. Gen. Irina Volk, confirmed that the suspect also inflicted injuries upon himself during the standoff.

While official investigations are ongoing, disturbing details about the attacker’s motive have emerged in Russian media. The Telegram channel Baza, which often has links to Russian security services, reported that the teenager is a member of a banned neo-Nazi organization (NS/WP).

Reports allege the attacker shouted nationalist and Holocaust-related slogans during the rampage. In a particularly grim detail cited by local media, the attacker is accused of using the victims’ blood to draw a Nazi swastika on the dormitory walls.

The 15-year-old suspect has been detained and is currently hospitalized in serious condition.

The Indian Embassy in Moscow has confirmed that four Indian students were injured. While their identities have not been publicly released to protect their privacy, the Russian Federal Health Ministry stated that they are receiving urgent medical care.

• One student is reported to be in serious condition.

• Three others have sustained moderate injuries.

• At least six people in total were injured in the spree.

India has moved swiftly to ensure the safety of its citizens. The Indian Embassy in Moscow described the event as an “unfortunate incident” and has dispatched a consular team from Kazan (approx. 400 km away) to Ufa to provide on-ground assistance.

“The Embassy is in touch with the authorities and the officials from the Consulate in Kazan are on their way to Ufa to provide assistance to the injured students,” the Embassy stated on X

Back in India, the All India Medical Students’ Association (AIMSA) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the government to establish stronger safety mechanisms for Indian medical students abroad.

Russia has long been a popular destination for Indian medical students due to its affordable education and recognized degrees. Ufa, a major educational hub, hosts a significant number of these students. This incident raises fresh concerns regarding the safety of Indian students overseas, following a series of unrelated violent incidents in the US and Canada over the past two years.

Russian authorities have launched a high-level probe into the security breach at the hostel and the attacker’s radicalization.
