RAIPUR, August 6 — One hundred government school students in Bastar just learned how to weaponise satire.

The state’s Public Relations Department partnered with Cartoon Watch to run a specialised illustration workshop in Jagdalpur, pulling teenagers away from standard curriculums to teach them the mechanics of visual communication. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai threw his official weight behind the ‘Muskurata Bastar’ initiative on Thursday. He met with Cartoon Watch editor Triambak Sharma at Mahanadi Bhawan to review the raw sketches pulled directly from the southern districts.

How does a region defined by decades of instability teach its youngest generation to process their reality?

They give them sketchpads.

Sai didn’t treat the exhibition as a simple arts and crafts exercise. He told state officials that cartooning isn’t merely childhood entertainment, framing the medium as a direct, accessible tool for building critical thinking among marginalised students. The chief minister argued that introducing creative expression early builds a psychological buffer. It pushes children toward a positive outlook rather than cynicism, balancing their formal education with deep cultural engagement.

But the workshops didn’t just focus on basic drawing techniques. Professional cartoonists from across India travelled to Bastar to break down the architecture of visual commentary. So the instructors taught these students how to frame social issues, use irony, and communicate complex local realities without writing a single word. They challenged the children to look at their immediate environment and draw exactly what they observed.

And the state government doesn’t plan to isolate this experiment to Jagdalpur. Sai instructed the department to scale the training camps across other districts to identify raw, untapped talent hiding in rural classrooms.
