Trump 100% Tariffs: The End of US-Canada Free Trade?

In a move that has sent shockwaves of fear and anger through global markets, US President Donald Trump has launched his most hostile economic attack yet on America’s closest ally. On Saturday, Trump threatened to impose a crushing 100% tariff on all Canadian goods, effectively declaring an economic war on its northern neighbor.

The trigger? A burgeoning trade agreement between Canada and China that Trump claims is a “betrayal” of North American solidarity.

The “Governor Carney” Insult

The President’s rhetoric has turned deeply personal and venomous. Taking to Truth Social, Trump deliberately belittled Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, referring to him as “Governor Carney” (a jab at Carney’s past role as a central banker) and accusing him of selling out his country.

“If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken,” Trump wrote. “China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life.”

This marks a stunning reversal—and many Canadians say, a betrayal—as Trump had previously signaled that Canada should be making its own trade deals. The sudden U-turn has left Ottawa scrambling and businesses on both sides of the border terrified of immediate supply chain collapses.

The Deal That Sparked the Rage

At the heart of the conflict is Canada’s desperate attempt to diversify its economy. Facing unpredictable pressure from Washington, Ottawa recently negotiated a deal to allow 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) into Canada at a reduced tariff rate of ~6%. In exchange, China agreed to lower tariffs on Canadian canola and agricultural exports—a lifeline for struggling Canadian farmers.

Trump, however, views this as a backdoor for China to flood the North American market, bypassing fierce US protectionism.

Carney Hits Back: “Focus on What We Can Control”

Facing an existential threat to the Canadian economy, Prime Minister Mark Carney has refused to back down. In a video address released Sunday morning, Carney did not address Trump by name but delivered a defiant message to a rattled nation.

“With our economy under threat from abroad, Canadians have made a choice,” Carney stated, his tone grave. “To focus on what we can control.”

Carney has effectively launched a “Buy Canadian” mobilization effort, urging citizens to support domestic businesses as the specter of a 100% tariff wall looms. The Prime Minister’s office is positioning this as a fight for sovereignty, but the mood in Ottawa is grim.

A Relationship in Ruins

This tariff threat is not an isolated incident; it is the culmination of months of deteriorating relations. Tensions have been boiling over the Greenland dispute, where the US is pushing for a “Golden Dome” missile defense system that Canada opposes. Trump has also repeatedly floated the idea of Canada becoming the “51st State,” a remark that has been met with fury in Ottawa.

Now, with the threat of 100% tariffs, the “longest undefended border in the world” is feeling more like a battle line. Economists warn that if Trump follows through, it wouldn’t just be a recession for Canada—it could be an economic depression.

As the trade war drums beat louder, the question for every Canadian business owner today is: Can we survive the wrath of Washington?
