A National Treasure on a Ventilator:

The Apathetic State of Vinod Kumar Shukla’s Medical Care

The literary world is in shock and outrage following reports of the deteriorating health and alleged administrative neglect of Vinod Kumar Shukla, the legendary Janpith Award-winning author. Despite being hailed as a “national treasure,” the 87-year-old writer is currently battling for his life on a ventilator at AIIMS Raipur, while his family struggles against hospital mismanagement.

The Dignity of a Giant vs. Bureaucratic Red Tape

The ordeal began in early November. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly called to enquire about Shukla’s health during a visit to Raipur, the subsequent state response was described as insulting.

According to family friend Sanket Thakur, a government official visited the hospital only to ask the author’s son, Shashwat Shukla, to fill out an application form begging for financial aid. In an act of quiet defiance and to preserve his father’s dignity, Shashwat refused to “apply” for help, believing that a state should honor its icons without forcing them to solicit charity.

Timeline of a Declining Health

• Early November: After spending nearly ₹4 lakh at a private hospital with no clear diagnosis, Shukla returned home having lost 15kg.

• November 21: In a poignant moment, he received the Jnanpith Award—India’s highest literary honor—at his residence due to his extreme physical frailty.

• December 3: His condition worsened, with severe respiratory distress. To avoid further crippling private medical costs, he was admitted to AIIMS Raipur.

• December 18: His condition turned critical, and he was shifted to a ventilator.

Grim Realities at AIIMS Raipur

The account shared by those close to the family paints a harrowing picture of the conditions at the premier government institute:

• Family as Nursing Staff: The family claims that instead of professional care, security guards summon them to change the author’s diapers, change bedsheets, and perform dressings.

• Medical Negligence: The family alleges that doctors often examine the Jnanpith laureate via mobile photos rather than physical check-ups.

• Hidden Costs: Despite being in a government facility, the family was reportedly asked to pay ₹25,000 to a private lab for a test that AIIMS could not conduct.

• Dismal Conditions: The son of the literary giant is reportedly forced to sleep on a mat on the floor of the waiting area, struggling even to get the ward floors cleaned by sweepers.

A Call for Action

The literary community and activists are now calling out the “hypocrisy” of politicians. While many were quick to pose for photographs with the author in better times, the current silence from the state and central administrations is deafening.

The plea from those on the ground is simple: Stop the photo-ops. They are demanding a dedicated medical board, a transparent health bulletin, and the dignity of care that a man of his stature—and indeed any citizen—deserves.
