From Gen Z students to local business owners, a peaceful but resolute march through the heart of Bilaspur signals a growing, nationwide demand for systemic examination reforms and absolute accountability.

BILASPUR — In a striking display of democratic engagement, hundreds of students, young professionals, and concerned citizens poured onto the streets of Bilaspur on Saturday. Bound by a shared vision for a fairer academic future, the crowd gathered to protest alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, demanding sweeping, systemic reforms to India’s competitive testing infrastructure and a transparent accountability mechanism.

Organized as the “Jan Aakrosh Rally” (Public Outrage March), the demonstration also served as a peaceful condemnation of the reported police action against student protesters recently witnessed at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Local coordination for the march was handled by advocate Priyanka Shukla alongside a wider committee of citizens. The day’s events began on a poignant note at Gandhi Chowk, where participants offered floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi before a single slogan was raised, setting a distinctly peaceful and resolute tone.

Winding its way through the city’s commercial and residential arteries, the march painted a picture of widespread civic solidarity. The procession moved steadily through Juna Bilaspur, City Kotwali, Gol Bazaar, and Sadar Bazaar. Organizers noted a heartening level of grassroots support; as the rally progressed, shopkeepers and residents stepped out of their homes and businesses to voice their backing for the students.

The march ultimately culminated at SIMS Chowk. When local police requested that the procession halt its forward movement, the organizers immediately and peacefully complied. In a moving finale that underscored the patriotic spirit of the movement, the demonstrators stood together to sing the National Anthem before dispersing.

Throughout the afternoon, the energy remained high but focused. Demonstrators chanted slogans challenging the Centre’s current examination policies, with a primary demand being the immediate dissolution of the National Testing Agency (NTA). Protesters argued that the NTA must be held accountable for the repeated controversies, alleged paper leaks, and structural irregularities that have severely eroded students’ trust in national-level entrance exams.

The rally also highlighted the deeply interconnected nature of India’s current youth movements. Slogans rang out in vocal support of education reform activist Sonam Wangchuk, whose ongoing demonstrations have successfully directed national attention toward the systemic crises facing India’s youth.

Addressing the gathered crowd, student leaders framed the recent resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as a crucial, hard-won victory for student-led movements nationwide. They pledged that this public mobilization is only the beginning, vowing to keep the momentum alive until concrete, transparent, and fair policies are permanently instituted.

The demographics of the Bilaspur rally spoke volumes about the issue’s universal impact. Backed by a dedicated volunteer team—including Kunal Ramteke, Nand Kashyap, Prathamesh Mishra, and dozens of other local citizens—the event drew heavily from Gen Z students, while also bringing parents, intellectuals, and senior citizens into the fold.
