Raipur, April 3, 2026:
Balancing life between the sea and the sports field, 18-year-old Abdul Fattah from Lakshadweep has created history by winning a gold medal in long jump at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026.
Hailing from Amini Island, a small and remote island in Lakshadweep, Fattah has become the first athlete from the Union Territory to cross the 7-metre mark, achieving a remarkable jump of 7.03 metres at the Krida Parisar ground in Jagdalpur.
Coming from a family of fishermen, Fattah spends his nights at sea supporting his family’s livelihood. Despite the physical demands of his work, he dedicates his mornings to training, showing exceptional determination and discipline.
Due to financial constraints, he had to pause his education after Class 12 and take on family responsibilities. However, his passion for sports never faded. Initially a football player, his talent was spotted during a local competition by coach Mohammed Kaseem, who guided him towards athletics.
Over the past two years, Fattah has trained in long jump and sprinting, despite the lack of proper infrastructure in Lakshadweep. With no synthetic tracks available, he practices on mud surfaces and local grounds.
The emergence of the Amini Athletics Association has played a key role in nurturing talent like his. The association has trained hundreds of young athletes, with several representing Lakshadweep at national-level events.
Fattah’s achievement is even more impressive considering his training limitations. His usual practice jumps range between 6.5 to 6.7 metres, but at the Games, he pushed beyond his limits to cross 7 metres.
Looking ahead, he aims to improve further and hopes that his success will bring better facilities and opportunities for athletes in Lakshadweep.
The Union Territory is gradually making its mark in athletics, with athletes like Mubassina Mohammed also achieving success at national and international levels.
Fattah’s journey stands as an inspiring example of resilience, hard work, and determination, proving that even from the most remote regions, champions can rise.
