JAGDALPUR/DANTEWADA, January 10, 2026:

The rhythmic beats of the Mandar and the vibrant hues of tribal attire took center stage today as the much-awaited ‘Bastar Pandum 2026’ officially commenced across the Bastar division. Billed as the “Soul of Bastar,” this mega cultural extravaganza aims to project the region’s rich indigenous heritage onto the global map, marking a decisive shift from a narrative of conflict to one of celebration and creativity.

The festival, which runs from January 10 to February 5, 2026, began this morning with Janpad (block) level competitions. Organized by the Chhattisgarh Culture Department, the event is set to witness the participation of thousands of tribal artists across seven districts—Bastar, Dantewada, Sukma, Bijapur, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, and Kanker.

From Conflict to Culture

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, who recently unveiled the festival’s official logo and theme song at the Danteshwari Temple, has championed Bastar Pandum as a pivotal instrument for the region’s cultural renaissance. “Bastar is no longer identified by fear, but by its future,” the CM stated, emphasizing the state’s resolve to showcase the unique traditions, forest-based wisdom, and artistic prowess of the tribal communities.

This year’s edition is particularly significant as it aligns with the central government’s deadline to eliminate Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) from the region by March 2026. The festival serves as a soft-power push, integrating youth and local communities into the mainstream through art and sport.

Expanded Disciplines and Three-Tier Format

Officials confirmed that the scale of the event has been significantly expanded. While the inaugural edition featured seven categories, Bastar Pandum 2026 will host competitions in 12 disciplines. These include:

  • Tribal Dance and Folk Songs
  • Traditional Musical Instruments
  • Tribal Theatre and Painting
  • Handicrafts and Jewelry
  • Traditional Cuisine and Beverages
  • Forest-based Medicinal Knowledge

The event follows a three-tier structure to ensure grassroots participation:

  1. Janpad Level: January 10 – January 20
  2. District Level: January 24 – January 30
  3. Divisional (Grand Finale): February 1 – February 5

Global Aspirations

In a bid to garner international attention, the state administration has proposed inviting ambassadors from various nations, alongside senior dignitaries including the President and Prime Minister of India, for the concluding ceremonies. The move is designed to attract tourism and provide a global platform for Bastar’s local artisans.

As the festivities begin today in 32 janpads, 1,885 gram panchayats, and urban bodies, the message is clear: the drums of Bastar are beating a new rhythm of peace and prosperity.
