Beyond Bastar: The Historical Significance of Surguja and Raipur

The history of the state of Chhattisgarh is rich and connected with the forests, the tribals, and the ancient kingdoms of the region. The state of Chhattisgarh came into existence on November 1, 2000, after the split of the state of Madhya Pradesh. However, the history of the region dates back to the early ages with many important events.
Among the most famous areas of the history of the state of Chhattisgarh is Bastar. Bastar has always been famous for its dense forests, tribal traditions, and rich local culture. For many centuries, the region of Bastar was under the rule of the Bastar kings. The Bastar Kingdom was founded by King Annama Deva in the 14th century. He was originally from the Kakatiya Kingdom of Warangal in the state of Telangana.
After reaching the region, he founded a kingdom that eventually became the Bastar State.
The rulers of Bastar were in power for many generations. The region remained mostly covered with forests with the tribals living their lives as they were originally familiar to. With the passage of time, Bastar became famous for its unique traditions, celebrations, and crafts.
One of the most famous events connected with this particular region is the Bastar Dussehra. Unlike the Dussehra festival held across the rest of the country, the Bastar Dussehra festival is primarily associated with the worship of the local goddess Danteshwari. And, the festival also goes on for a period of weeks.
The city of Jagdalpur also became the capital of the Bastar kingdom and has remained an important cultural hub until the present day. Many tribal groups, including the Gond, Maria, and Muria, have been a part of the Bastar region for a long time.
Another important region located within the state of Chhattisgarh is the Surguja region. Similar to the Bastar region, the Surguja region also has a long history of tribal rule and the existence of small kingdoms. Like the Bastar region, the Surguja region also came under British rule during the colonial period. Similar to the Bastar region, the forests located within the Surguja region also played a crucial role in the lives of the residents.
The capital city of the state of Chhattisgarh is Raipur. which has now developed as a hub for business, learning, and governance. Areas like Janjgir-Champa have earned their name as major areas of agriculture and power generation. These areas show how the state of Chhattisgarh has evolved over time while still maintaining its cultural roots.
Today, the state of Chhattisgarh is recognised as a hub of resources, tribal culture, and rich traditions. The stories of Bastar, Surguja, and other areas shows how the history of the state has been written with the presence of forests, kingdoms, and people who populated these areas over time. Today, people can still witness the presence of traditions that existed during these periods.
