BIJAPUR, Chhattisgarh – The thick forests of Bijapur district of Chattisgarh witnessed the high ranking Maoist leader being shot during an early morning gun battle on Thursday. This recent conflict comes amidst the increasing pressure of operations by the security forces to achieve the deadline set by the Union government to put an end to the long standing insurgency.

The Morning Ambush
The operations started at about 7:30 AM as a combined force of the security personnel based on certain intelligence moved into the forested interior. What began as a strategic flank, soon evolved to a severe shooting match.
Though the operation is still technically in progress and shots are being heard at regular intervals in the afternoon, the authorities have already retrieved the body of one Maoist and a high-tech AK-47 rifle at the place of action.
Who was Udham Singh?
Nonetheless, even as police await the formal identification process to end, informants to the case have recognized the assassinated insurgent as Udham Singh. Singh had allegedly belonged to the strong Divisional Committee of the Maoist and his ousting was a great loss to the local command organization.
The Bigger Picture: A Window of Opportunity.
This is not a one-time incident. The anti-Left-wing extremist groups pressure in the Bastar region has taken the fever pitch. Consider these numbers:
23: Maoists who were killed in Chhattisgarh since the beginning of 2026.
14: The insurgent casualties neutralized on the same day took place on the 3 rd of January.
285: The total maoist who were killed throughout the state last year.
Why Now?
The magnitude of such operations is correlated with a definite commandment of the New Delhi: the Union government has established a time limit up to the March 31 to successfully complete the Left-wing insurgency.
The loss of veteran leaderships such as Nambala Kesava Rao (alias Basavaraju) last May and a steady wave of surrenders are causing what experts term as leadership decapitation to the outlawed organization. In the case of the villages located in the Red Corridor, what is hoped is that such a spurt in security action will eventually lead to the eventual peace and development of the area.
RootsAlert will be tracking the events in Bijapur because the situation on the ground will keep being known to the encounter location as information continues to emerge.
