By centering his politics on the “Abhay” (fearlessness) vs. “Darr” (fear) binary, Gandhi is attempting to dismantle the BJP’s perceived invincibility.

For a long time, the political identity of Rahul Gandhi was defined by his detractors. However, recent sessions in Parliament suggest a significant pivot. The Leader of the Opposition is no longer just reacting; he is attempting to frame the national conversation around a fundamental human emotion: fear.

In his recent speeches, Gandhi has leaned heavily into the philosophical and spiritual concept of “Abhay” or fearlessness. He argues that the current ruling dispensation governs through the cultivation of fear—fear of state agencies, fear of social ostracization, and fear of economic instability. By positioning the Congress and the INDIA bloc as the “shield against fear,” he is trying to build a moral contrast rather than just a policy-based one.

This “Courage-Fear” binary is a clever strategic move. It moves the goalposts away from the BJP’s preferred battleground of “Efficiency vs. Entitlement” or “Nationalism vs. Corruption.” Instead, it seeks to connect with the voter on a visceral level. Gandhi’s rhetoric suggests that the average citizen—whether a farmer, a student, or a small business owner—is living in a state of constant apprehension, and that the first step toward “Justice” (Nyay) is the removal of that fear.

Critics argue that this approach remains too abstract for a country grappling with tangible issues like inflation and unemployment. However, supporters see it as the “de-coding” of the Modi-era hegemony. By attacking the psychological foundation of the BJP’s power, Gandhi is attempting to prove that the “emperor” of invincibility has no clothes.

Whether this philosophical shift translates into electoral gains remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Rahul Gandhi has finally found a language that he is comfortable speaking, and it is a language that seeks to challenge the status quo from the inside out.
