NEW DELHI, June 25 — Sudden flash flooding forced authorities to shut down critical stretches of Delhi’s Ring Road today. Torrential downpours hit the capital, instantly submerging the arterial route and triggering citywide traffic chaos. Commuters found themselves trapped as water levels rose dangerously high near major underpasses. How does a global capital function when its primary transit artery suddenly turns into a river? It simply doesn’t.

Delhi Traffic Police immediately barricaded the flooded zones and issued emergency diversions. They’ve urged all citizens to avoid the Ring Road entirely. The closure cascaded into adjacent neighbourhoods, completely paralyzing movement from South Delhi to the central business districts. Vehicles couldn’t move an inch for hours. Drivers abandoned stalled cars in the muddy water, while emergency responders struggled to navigate the impenetrable gridlock to reach stranded citizens.

The infrastructure failure didn’t catch the administration entirely off guard.

Just hours prior, the Delhi government’s flood control department officially identified 169 locations heavily prone to waterlogging. They specifically flagged 30 vulnerable spots directly along the Ring Road. The Public Works Department had recently installed temporary pump sets to manage the accumulation. But they couldn’t handle the sheer volume of today’s localized downpour, and the preliminary defences collapsed within minutes.

The India Meteorological Department has tracked highly unstable atmospheric conditions across the National Capital Region all week. They’ve recorded extreme weather whiplash, transitioning from 100 kmph dust storms to this sudden deluge. And officials haven’t provided any concrete timeline for reopening the crucial corridor. They’re currently battling to deploy heavy-duty extraction pumps while towing away broken-down vehicles. So until the water physically drains, the capital remains choked and divided.
