Tragedy in Pakistan: Suicide Bomber Targets Tarlai Imambargah During Friday Prayers, Leaving 31 Dead and 160+ Injured Amid High Security Alert.

Pakistan Shiite Mosque Blast 70014

A quiet Friday afternoon had turned into a carnage in the islamabad Pakistani capital when a suicide bomber attacked the Tarlai Imambargah which is a major Shia religious centre in the Shehzad Town locality. The attack has already taken the lives of at least 31, not to mention that it has left over 160 people injured, many of them critically.

The Moment of the Attack

The bomb had been detonated when people came to the weekly congregation prayers. As the local police sources allude, the tragedy would have been even more dismal, had it not been to the wits of the security staff at the gate. The bomber was allegedly apprehended at the door but he exploded himself before he could be properly restrained.

The power of the explosion would break the windows and cause the most considerable damage to the building, shaking the federal capital.

Emergency Response

This was followed by a state of emergency in all major hospitals in the city of Islamabad in the immediate aftermath. Local volunteers and rescue units came as fast as possible to the area to carry the injured to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Science (PIMS) and other relevant services.

Talal Chaudhry, the Minister of State Interior, went to PIMS to see the injured and assured the relatives that they would get the best medical attention. Such cowardice actions can never reduce the morale of our nation as said by Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, the representative of the area where the blast had taken place.

Investigation and Context

Although there is no official claim of responsibility by any particular group, the police investigators have felt that the attackers was a foreigner, associated with Fitina al Khwaraji (a term used by the Pakistani authorities to denote the Tehreek-e-taliban Pakistan or TTP).

The time when the attack was conducted is also very sensitive because it came at a time when the Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was in a high profile visit to the country. It is also an alarming rampant increase in violence; this was only months after a similar suicide bombing had been done in a court building in the city.

A Nation in Mourning

Criticisms have been received on both sides of the political divide. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif both released statements on this labeling the attacking of uninvolved civilians as a crime against humanity.

To a great number of Islamabad residents, it is a day of grief. Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas noted that an assault on a place of worship is an assault on the humanity and social values and urged the nation to unite against the increasing extremist threats.

With the ongoing investigation, security has been stepped up throughout the capital, and extra checkpoints and patrolling of religious sites and other public gatherings.
