The Raipur–Visakhapatnam Economic Corridor is a 464 km, six-lane, access-controlled greenfield highway designed to transform the logistics landscape of Central India. By bypassing traditional bottlenecks, the project aims to reduce travel time between Raipur and the Visakhapatnam port from 12 hours to just 6–7 hours.

Key Project Specifications
- Total Length: 464 km
- Design Speed: 100 km/h
- Total Estimated Investment: ₹16,491 crore
- Chhattisgarh Stretch: 125 km (Investment: ₹4,146 crore)
- Completion Target: Full commissioning expected by late 2026/early 2027.
The “Eco-Sensitive” Engineering: Udanti-Sitanadi Tunnel
A standout feature for Roots Alert is the integration of high-speed infrastructure within a fragile ecosystem. This is being branded as Chhattisgarh’s first “Eco-Corridor.”
- Signature Feature: A 2.79 km twin-tube tunnel passing directly beneath the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve.
- Purpose: This allows the highway to traverse hilly terrain without surface-level fragmentation of the tiger habitat, ensuring a “zero-interference” path for wildlife above.
Wildlife Mitigation Measures
The project includes extensive “Green Infrastructure” to prevent animal-vehicle collisions (AVC):
- Elephant Mobility: 8 dedicated overbridges in the Dhamtari corridor.
- Primate Safety: 28 monkey canopies in the Udanti-Sitanadi area.
- General Crossings: 19 specialized passages for tigers, bears, and other mammals.
- Advanced Monitoring: Deployment of camera-based monitoring systems and traffic impact attenuators.
Logistics & Economic Impact
For stakeholders in the Roots network, this corridor acts as a high-speed “logistics spine” connecting the mineral-rich hinterlands to the eastern seaboard.
- Mineral Transport: It will significantly expedite the movement of iron ore and other minerals from central India to the Visakhapatnam port for export.
- District Connectivity: The route passes through and provides market access to several tribal and “aspirational” districts:
- Dhamtari
- Kanker
- Bastar
- Kondagaon
- Environmental Efficiency: NHAI projects a substantial decrease in fuel consumption and carbon emissions due to the flatter, more direct route compared to existing legacy highways.
Status of Chhattisgarh Phases (as of Jan 2026)
The Chhattisgarh portion is divided into three major packages, with an overall completion rate exceeding 70%.
| Package | Stretch | Distance | Projected Completion |
| Package 1 | Jhanki to Sargi | 42 km | April – Nov 2026 |
| Package 2 | Sargi to Vasanvahi | 57 km | April – Nov 2026 |
| Package 3 | Vasanvahi to Marangpuri | 25 km | April – Nov 2026 |
Strategic Note
The corridor is a critical component of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, focusing on improving the efficiency of freight movement in India. The successful integration of the Udanti-Sitanadi tunnel serves as a pilot for future highway projects through protected forest lands in India.
