Washington/New Delhi: In a move that has sent shockwaves through global markets, US President Donald Trump has issued a stern ultimatum to nations continuing to purchase Russian oil, threatening a staggering 500% tariff on their exports to the United States. The warning, directed largely at BRICS nations including India and China, marks a significant escalation in Washington’s economic war against Moscow.

Speaking from the White House on Thursday, President Trump declared that countries “funding the Russian war machine” by bypassing Western sanctions would face severe economic consequences. “If you buy from Putin, you pay America. We will impose a 500% tariff on goods coming from any country that continues to prioritize cheap Russian crude over global security,” Trump stated.

For India, this poses a complex diplomatic and economic challenge. Since 2022, Russia has become India’s largest oil supplier, providing discounted crude that has helped New Delhi manage domestic inflation and keep petrol prices stable. A 500% tariff on Indian goods—such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, and machinery—could cripple India’s export sector, which relies heavily on the American market.

Sources in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) indicate that New Delhi is analyzing the threat. While India has consistently maintained that its energy purchases are driven by “legitimate energy security needs,” the sheer scale of the threatened tariffs may force a strategic rethink. Experts warn that if implemented, these tariffs could shave off significant percentage points from India’s GDP and trigger a trade war that neither side can fully afford.

Market reaction was swift, with the Sensex tumbling over 800 points as investors fear the impact on IT and pharma sectors, which have significant exposure to the US economy.
